Planted some more lettuce today, rosemary, onions, coriander and mint. All seedlings from Bunnings (seeds still seem to be beyond me). Also- Checkout the growth! Carrots, zucchini and cabbage are growing like mad and the random cutting that the community garden guys gave us has some leaves.

Another experiment. I saw these kits in Bunnings a couple of months ago but it has been too hot to try and grow them (max temp of 25). The 'kit' is basically two fibrous chipboards that you soak, sprinkle the seeds and then put in a plastic bag with a small air hole. You leave it for 6 weeks for hte roots to develop (white flour like mould) then put in the fridge for two days. Take it out and keep it moist while the mushrooms grow over the next weeks. Pick young
Everything is growing really well at the moment, lots of sun, cooler afternoons and (thanks to the irrigation system Liam installed) lots of water every day. Unfortunately the vegetables I planted are not the only things growing well...weeds and grass are on steroids! I managed to almost fill the rubbish bin with clippings. Now, I want to keep the lawn looking good but that is just ridiculous!
I don't have a solution yet but there has to be something out there! I got impatient with the seeds I planted last week and decided to go for some seedlings as well. Hopefully seeing something growing will inspire me to keep up with the watering/ weeding. We also stopped in at the community garden and they showed us around, fed us a bunch of leaves and gave us some cuttings.
Today we planted:
Tomorrow we set up an irrigation system... Finally got the vegetable patch cleaned up and in a state ready for planting. Two full trailer loads to the dump as well as a number of full wheelie bins in the last couple of weeks. Phew! I managed to do about a 1/3rd in the evenings after work and then Liam finished it off last week. We got a bunch of Diggers seeds from Mum and Dad for christmas. Unfortunately, with the move, we have missed the deadline for planting some of them but there are enough to get us started. Today we planted:
Update: 07/05/2016
THe snow peas are going gangbusters but only one of the lettuces seeds started growing and no signs of anything else. I think I might have pulled up a few though thinking they were weeds. I might need to re-think this strategy. |
About this blogThis is a diary of my garden and a record of the successes and "learning opportunities" that gardening brings. With a focus on edible plants that grow in central Queensland (sub tropical with occasional frost in winter) I am using it to track when I plant/harvest and how the different plants grow Archives
