Ok, So the last attempt was a bit of a disaster but I really want to be able to grow plants from seed. It opens up a lot more possibilities for different species, staggering the planting and is a lot more economical as well. There were two main problems with the last attempt
I think getting the plants a little bigger before I plant them out might help on both fronts and so I tried sprouting some lettuce and some of the seeds they gave us at the community garden in my mung bean grower that sits on the kitchen counter and...I am feeling pretty positive about the results so far!! These are ~1 week old (I didn't think it would work so I didn't take note of exactly when I put them in but they seem to be loving it. I got very inspired and decided to buy a couple other 'glass house' things to try out and see if I can get things growing through winter. I took the sprouts and planted them out in the below tray Also planted out the below trays. The photos are pretty boring- taken just so I don't have to worry if I loose the packet. I have numbered the trays so I can reuse them
9,10,11 and 12 I planted out some of the sprouts and in cardboard pots I put tomato-harvest in 10 weeks On a side note- we have been eating really well recently. Lots of lettuce, zucchini and herbs
Two zucchinis picked, snow pea and tomato flowering and the lettuce is growing well. Also, planted a celery base- the internet tells me that it might grow but if it just rots that won't be too bad for the garden either
Put in some stakes and wire to help support the tomato. I planted them slightly randomly so it is a bit of a pain to get them all. Next time they all get planted in a nice neat row
Love the composition of this photo and the light is perfect...shame about the focus.
I noticed yesterday that there were aphids all over one of the zucchini bushes so I was going to put some insecticide on it but when I came out this morning it was covered in lady bugs. Yay for nature doing it's thing and not needing poison. I have had this Aloe plant for years and, while I managed to keep it alive, it never really flourished. I wasn't really sure where I was going to put it at the new place so it has been sitting next to the veranda- no water but a fair bit of dew each morning. The thing has flourished. There are five or six little runner plants and it started FLOWERING. The birds and butterflies love it..
Planted some more lettuce today, rosemary, onions, coriander and mint. All seedlings from Bunnings (seeds still seem to be beyond me). Also- Checkout the growth! Carrots, zucchini and cabbage are growing like mad and the random cutting that the community garden guys gave us has some leaves.

About this blogThis is a diary of my garden and a record of the successes and "learning opportunities" that gardening brings. With a focus on edible plants that grow in central Queensland (sub tropical with occasional frost in winter) I am using it to track when I plant/harvest and how the different plants grow Archives
